you're right...it's western pleasure. it's hideous. the rules state that the poll is not supposed to be lower than the withers, but unfortunately that rule isn't followed very much and this is the crap you see winning. it's very unfortunate and i'd rather retrain an ex-ANYTHING rather than an ex-wp horse. ew ew ew.

Ack, I saw it posted there, and thought the exact same thing as you!!! Poor thing... It makes me SICK the way some people have literally RUINED horses, or pretty much the whole discipline, all in the name of winning some money. Like, seriously, when you can't even tell which gait the horse is in...ok, there's a problem. Now I know not all western pleasure people train their horses like this, there are some good ones out there who are all about it for the love of the horse, not the love of the money. But they are few and far between.

This is why I dispise breed show. Makes me sick that HUS is basically western pleasure with an english saddle. The way that horse is moving is in NO WAY natural, or healthy, I don't care if it's "bred that way" or not. I won't ever be a part of that world, money or or no money. IMHO hunters are slowly going the way of western pleasure...all about the "look" and less about the horses. I don't know...

Sad that there are such amazing displays of horsemanship and talent out there, and then there's, well...this:(
take your pleasures, life is brief.blauereiterin on March 12th, 2007 01:27 am (UTC)
totally! it seems like many disciplines have gone the way of what "places" and what places is NOT always what's good for the horse. i just don't get many different discipline practices, but this is just GROSSSSS. so ugly and soooo hard to untrain!

I cant view the video on my computer but from what everyone has said I think I get the idea.

I dont like that in Western. I dont understand what the point of it is. It isn't attractive and its not good for the horse. It was always the view of my bf and I that was the way things were in the western world...

Then one day we saw this little stallion at a western display and fell in love with THIS style of western riding.

Little Foxie Knoxie. Now that style of western riding appeals to me!

thats the kind of western my mare does. she'll go slow as the day is long, but its because she is light and balenced, rather than having been pulled into the ground. after all, if i made her into a "real" western pleasure horse, theres no way we could have run speed classes too XD

but needless to say, we never placed.

This video nicely demonstrates a rant my trainer did about everything wrong with western pleasure. Notice the four-beat canter, that looks like the horse is lame, off-balance, and one stride from falling on his face. Observe the lack of sync at the walking-trot, and the lazyass way he drags his feet through the sand. And stare in wonder that even certified judges reward this sort of poor-training, and demonstrate that sometimes you can do well even if you suck donkey nuts.

I wouldn't pay five thousand for this guy; I'd have to completely retrain him.
Erinappolonia on March 12th, 2007 01:44 am (UTC)
haha no i totally agree as well. an old friend of mine had western pleasure horses, and i rode them a few times... and i can honestly say thats the only time i've been on a horse and felt totally and completely useless. it took no riding at all, they just plodded around, and they knew only what had been drilled into them for the showing. there was no way you could have taken these horses out on a trail, and say, asked for a run across a field. heck, even asking for some actual movement was greek to them. and the "canter" was so incredibly awkward. i mean, we were going at what was aproxamate to my TB's "very very very slow trot" speed, and i felt like i was going to fall over his head at any moment. I HATE HATE HATE whats been done to western pleasure.

*ahem* sorry that turned into kind of a rant.

That horse shouldn't be placing under AQHA rules, as it's four beating.
Hoodsey: Pomonahoodsey on March 12th, 2007 02:32 am (UTC)
That is way way slow. lol Even for western pleasure. And yea, he is four beating. Arabs go just as slow in westner pleasure (not as slow as our buckskin here) only they have really hooky necks.

Its for the lazy riders I guess? Dunno. We have a couple western pleasure horses being kept at my dad's and I's place, but they don't move that slow by any means and they have a level head.

Guess thats why I stick to my friesians and percherons. >_>

I was helping a woman at my barn who shows western pleasure at the local level and the one thing I kept telling her is the her mare was loping in the front but jogging in the hind. She was working to get her mare to lop properly and it just wasn't working at that speed. Western pleasure is slow and rather boring to watch/ride. Give me a jumper course or barrel racing any day.
Pine: Jamie2felonytexas on March 12th, 2007 03:19 am (UTC)
"her mare was loping in the front but jogging in the hind."

That's what they are supposed to be doing, actually. Do not ask my why I never figured it out. But apparently it's a desirable thing.

I work with reining horses for a reason.
Lord MoufMouflordmoufmouf on March 12th, 2007 03:06 am (UTC)
I believe it was Xenophon who said something along the lines of: "A horse should move as if he is enjoying what he is doing".

There is one western pleasure horse at our barn, and everytime I see him, he looks lame and unhappy. It doesn't seem like you need a lot of riding skills to ride one of those horses either. I've seen a lot of WP riders with terrible chair-seats.

It's after seeing videos like this I am reminded of why I hate Quarter Horses so much.

Yuck, just... yuck yuck YUCK. I don't know how ANYONE could EVER think that's beautiful. It's hideous and the horse looks miserable.

This is why I a) ride Morgans and b) DON'T ride Western. Strike that actually; I used to train western pl Morgans but it was a lot different-looking than any of this crap. No overflexed horses, no noses dragging on the ground, no miserable expressions.

I had the misfortune of attending a stock horse show (it was being held at my college not 100 yards from my dorm) and was appalled and sickened. It's just gross to watch.

I just kept wanting it to...go...faster. Like, i wanted to put MY leg on and let it lope so it actually looks like it's loping, and not about to have all its legs fall and its head fall into the sand. From a video i watched about Western Pleasure i knew the head was meant to be below the withers but it also said that the horse should be level and not on the forehand, working evenly and from behind. But then again, i pretty much no nothing about Western. It just doesn't look good at all.

I thought AQHA/APHA where getting rid of the four beating peanut rollers? I remember reading several articles about it. And in the local QH circuit they've stopped placing so high.
missgingergray on March 13th, 2007 01:52 pm (UTC)
Okay... this is MY video. This isn't my horse, but I filmed the video and posted it. I've gathered that none of you people are involved in the Quarter Horse industry or understand anything about western pleasure. Key word = understand. This horse is NOT four beating. It's as simple as looking at his legs and counting: 1,2,3,1,2,3. Yes, he gets a little indistinct at times, especially to the left. This horse likes to get lazy and drop his shoulder. But he has incredible reach, drive, and impulsion from behind. Contrary to what many of you may believe, it takes an amazing athlete to be a pleasure horse. To hold their body in position and go at a slower (yet still natural) speed is not something any piece of junk can do. These horses are BRED for this. This horse's dam has won over $7k in AQHA Incentive Fund money and has placed at the World Show multiple times. They want to go slow. I have a five year old gelding that I've had since he was born, and while he's not bred as nice as this horse, it's natural for him to move slower with his head carriage level. If you don't believe me, I could show you video of him as a yearling on the longe line. This horse is NOT lame, is NOT moving like he's about to fall on his face; he is a little on the forehand, but it's not bad. This was about the 5th time the horse had been ridden since August or September, so yeah, he needs a little tuning up, but not much. He'll never win anything at the AQHA World Show in WP simply because he's got a little more knee action that's desired, but it's still not bad at all. This horse is a good mover, and I don't know what else to say to defend this good horse AND a sport that I love. I hate to make assumptions about people, but I'm sure that most of you have not ever tried to go outside of your own discipline and learn anything about pleasure with an open mind, right?

Oh, and this is community is called "Bad Riding"? This horse's rider is in no way a bad rider... she's extremely quiet with her legs, seat, and for the most part hands.

If you're going to post another LJ user's video, maybe try to make sure that they can't see it next time. But thanks for letting me defend myself.
The Adventures of Blitzblitzen_ on March 13th, 2007 02:47 pm (UTC)
i guess what people are noticing here is that teh horse looks... miserable.

the arabians in this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LC8RefCBJrw) look... depressed too.

sure, i am not a WP rider i am open to other disciplines (and i'm not american so don't "do" h/j or whatever the choice is) but as a horse person... that horse just doesn't look like it's enjoying itself. shouldn't most riding be about verve? impulsion? forward? basic principles. and that jog looks like horses that are over trained and just... sad.

it's not about how much money the horse has won, or how well bred they are, or if they are naughty or haven't been ridden or whatever. it just doesn't seem natural... i don't think ppl here are specifically commenting on the horse in particular, it's just a general comment about WP.

and from observing horses in large paddocks in herd situations, and videos of wild horses and so on, i have not seen a horse sustain that kind of jog gait for more than maybe 2 strides. after that, the tail is flicked up, the head is high, and the knees are about 2' higher and the horse looks animated, alive and ... exhilirated. also known as 'passage'...

This is my last comment in this community. Obviously you guys were all out to hang this horse (and the industry) from the start. Why else would you have posted this? A lot of the reason that WP can sometimes have a bad reputation is because of people like you guys. Hardly any of you are involved in the QH industry, and have probably never been to a QH show. This isn't even limited to QH's. You guys think that WP is boring because it's slow. That to me says that you're very uneducated and can only appreciate horses if they're spinning, sliding, jumping, chasing cans. How different are some dressage maneuvers? Honestly... I'm done. It's like talking to a foreigner that is trying to tell me that Americans are all fat, lazy pigs. This is a nice, happy horse, who will make someone very happy.

I saw earlier someone said western pleasure is for lazy riders.
It is A LOT of work.

I do many different things, and getting a horse to be GOOD at western pleasure is quite difficult.

Although WP isnt my favorite, I happen to enjoy it, and enjoy watching the better pairs of the bunch :)
sydaustralia on March 14th, 2007 09:10 pm (UTC)
Your right. I started riding in Pony Club on an Arabian mare that was an ex-race horse. So, I know how to jump and ride dressage, but then I got a Quarter Horse and started going to open shows. Now I have a relatively well trained Quarter Horse, and it is just as 'difficult' to ride western pleasure and hunter under saddle horse as it is to do other things.

Also, as for judges. Yes, some are still place the horses with their noses in the dirt, but were I'm from there are a lot that are getting better. My sister's horse is a big 17h dun who was previously shown on the Buckskin circuit. He isn't the slowest guy around because of his size, in fact his best class is Hunter Under Saddle, but he still was able to get a ROM in western pleasure and was always in the top when she would show him in western pleasure.
